Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Ultimate Edition) – A Brief Review

Ultimately, all the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (BvS for short) director’s cut did was upgrade¬†a D+ to a C-. All the choices made in storytelling, character, and directing from the theatrical cut that I felt were sloppy or just plain dumb in execution are still there, but they just added slightly more context to specific characters’ actions, primarily Superman, which, yes, sure, we needed that and it’s appreciated, but it’s not enough to save the movie.

Also I couldn’t help but wonder the entire time why it was even an R-rated cut at all. A character says “fuck” once which you can do under a PG-13 rating, but besides that, there wasn’t anything graphic enough to make this cut deserve an R-rating. It was clearly just for the buzz that accompanies¬†the rating.

So basically to anyone that saw BvS in theaters and thought it was meh or bad, I say just avoid the Ultimate Edition. It won’t transform this mess into a masterpiece for you. If you thought it was already a good movie as is, you’ll probably enjoy this cut even more.

Grade: C-

NOTE: Since my issues with this cut primarily have to do with the faults of the theatrical, I will be posting a more thorough review of BvS at a later time to justify these complaints; I promise!
